Excursions in the surroundings
Apart from the beaches close by, we would suggest a day trip to the Mar Menor, a large salt water lagoon separated from the Mediterranean Sea by a thin strip of land. It is an ideal place to swim, sail and windsurf. We would recommend Aqua Adicta, a small watersports school run by two British instructors who also speak Spanish. www.aqua-adicta.co.uk
Lorca
‘City of the Sun’ some 35 kms from Calabardina, it is easily reached from Aguilas via a modern dual carriageway. A stroll through it’s beautiful historic quarter can be combined with a visit to it’s castle where the visitor will be pleasantly surprised with a virtual reality tour known as the ‘workshop of time’ and also by actors dressed in medieval costumes re-enacting scenes depicting life in ancient times. Easter week in Lorca is marked by its incredibly large and popular processions, declared to be of ‘National Tourist Interest’. These can best be described as ‘spectacular’ and the rivalry between the different ‘pasos’ or clubs, results in bigger and better parades every year.
Caravaca de la Cruz
The Caravaca Cross has become the emblem of the town and its fame has spread worldwide. In addition, the Holy Sede has bestowed upon Caravaca the honour of being allowed to celebrate an Año Jubilar once every seven years for perpetuity, similar, for example, to Santiago de Compostela. Today the symbolism of the cross had passed from being purely religious and has become embedded in the social and cultural life of the towns inhabitants.
Calasparra, Active Excursions
Famous for it’s production of high quality rice. The description ‘Activity Tourism’ refers to the variety of outdoor pursuits on offer such as White Water Rafting on the river Segura. Well worth a visit are the ‘Santuario de la Virgen de la Esperanza’ and the ‘Cueva del Puerto’.
